Problem:
DocuPet is a mature US and Canadian pet licensing and lost-pet-reunification platform, backed by a strong in-house web team. When DocuPet launched HomeSafe® — a GPS and health-monitoring wearable for pets, built on Invoxia's hardware — the product needed a genuine companion mobile app: one that could sync live location and biometric telemetry from a physical tracker over a cellular network, not just another consumer utility app. That's a different discipline from web development, and DocuPet's internal team, focused on maintaining and growing the core web platform, didn't have the bandwidth or hardware-integration expertise to take on a parallel iOS and Android build without risking the wrong product shipping at the wrong time.
Solution:
Latent deployed a dedicated managed mobile pod to build the HomeSafe® companion app end to end for iOS and Android, integrated directly with the tracker hardware over a 4G LTE-M connection:
-
GPS tracking & geofencing — live location tracking, Virtual Fences that alert owners the moment a pet leaves a set safe zone, and proximity-based "Find Nearby" search with a remotely triggered ringer.
-
Medical-grade health monitoring — continuous heart rate and breathing rate tracking, a visualized heart-signature view for at-a-glance cardiac analysis, and one-tap health reports a pet owner can send straight to their vet.
-
AI-driven behavioral insights — daily and weekly activity reports that benchmark each pet against its own baseline and against others of the same breed and age.
-
Secure-by-design data handling — encrypted location and personal data in transit, with no third-party data sharing, built to Play Store and App Store data-safety requirements from day one.
As with DocuPet's core platform, Latent worked alongside the internal team rather than around it — aligning on product direction while independently owning mobile engineering, QA, and delivery milestones, with architecture and scope decisions front-loaded before development began.
Impact:
The HomeSafe® companion app shipped and is live today on the App Store and Google Play, giving DocuPet a genuine hardware-plus-software product rather than a registry platform with an add-on app. The broader HomeSafe® ecosystem — hardware and app together — has since won seven international awards, including Best Innovation at CES 2024, and is backed by veterinarians as a legitimate health-monitoring tool, not just a novelty tracker. For DocuPet, it validated the same execution model proven on their web platform: a managed pod operating with full ownership alongside an existing internal team, now extended into wearable and IoT app development.
Key Outcomes:
-
iOS and Android companion app shipped for a GPS + health-monitoring pet wearable
-
Real-time GPS tracking, geofencing, and proximity search built and integrated with hardware telemetry over 4G LTE-M
-
Medical-grade heart and breathing rate monitoring, with vet-shareable health reports
-
AI-driven daily and weekly insights benchmarked against breed and age baselines
-
Part of a product that has since won 7 international awards, including Best Innovation at CES 2024
